Super Comfort Cow Cubicles
Evolving from previous cubicle designs the Super
Comfort has been designed to incorporate the
latest thinking. With divisions set at 1100 to
1150mm centres, this allows space sharing whilst
the cows lie down, but keeps the cow square in
the bed and does not allow the cow to lie
diagonally which would cause soiling on the bed.
Although some concern has been voiced in the
past about space sharing being associated with
teat damage, this is not well founded, as most
damage is self-inflicted with old cubicle
designs due to lower rails being set too high
and narrow cubicle widths. The damage usually
occurred when animals were getting up and had to
take a sideways step to miss the division.
The Super Comfort design has many
more advantageous features such as:
- Fully adjustable system
for both height and width.
- No rear leg which would
be prone to corrosion and hinder the cow
when rising or space sharing.
- Ease of setting up, with
only the need to position posts (at 2850
approx. centres) and fix support rail.
Cubicle divisions can be fitted at a later
date when beds have been concreted and
mattresses laid.
The Super Comfort is also well
suited to cubicle house refurbishment,
especially for middle/inner rows facing a feed
passage where a walled front could be removed
and the support rails would be used to stop cows
trying to walk through, whilst allowing greater
open lunging room.
If lunging room is not created on a short bed,
then the animal will rise with its front legs
first (unnaturally) which can lead to joint
overloading and teat damage.
Cubicle Installation Notes
- All IAE cubicles must be
installed using recommended head rail and
brackets positioned to the dimensions shown.
- Cubicles must be
installed in the correct position on the
cubicle bed.
- Cubicles must be
installed using good quality concrete.
- When setting up a new
cubicle bed a 2.5 pitch should be used
(refer to the chart), as this allows any
liquid to run off the mattress. There is
some research to suggest that a greater bed
pitch may be of benefit to the cow, the
reason suggested for this is that the
natural progression of food through the
stomach would be aided (this may be true as
animals often lie uphill). With the accepted
preference for the animal to lie down for
large amounts of time, the animal comfort
must be of the upmost importance.
